Meet Sapphire!

“Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope.”- Maya Angelou

“Justice is what love looks like in public.” -Cornel West

I’m a lover of humankind, a dreamer, a person of action and a stanch believer in the ability of everyday people to change the world! It’s an honor to work as a doula and a dream come true to lead this work in my city.

I’ve been a doula since 2017 and have helped many families as they’ve welcomed their babies into the world. I’m also a midwifery student, a lactation & childbirth educator, a nonprofit leader and the founder of the Wichita Birth Justice Society. I’m on a mission to eliminate the unequal burden of loss on our community’s Black and Brown birth giving people and babies. It’s an injustice that personally touched my life when I lost my daughter, Ella, to an unexpected death in utero just a week before her due date in 2013. Ella’s death was the worst thing I’ve ever experienced, but I’m proud to fight for birth equity in her memory.

I believe that birth is a natural and sacred event to be held in the highest regard. What happens in birth sets the stage for the rest of you and your child’s life together! As such, I believe that you have a right to birth your baby on your terms in whatever way you would like. I believe that the time of pregnancy, birth and postpartum should be carefully protected and that you, the birth giver, have a right to compassionate and nurturing care. I will never make decisions for you or coerce you but will walk beside you through this important journey.

I intimately understand the intersectionality of life experiences as well as the need for enhanced care to combat the effects of institutionalized racism in maternity care. I am specially trained in ancestral birth/postpartum traditions and see my work as an extension of the nurturing care that was once provided within our own communities, by our own people, prior to the existence of the medical industrial complex. I would consider it the highest honor and privilege to serve you and your family during this important time in your lives!

I specialize in providing support to families of all types who have complex pregnancies and stressful life situations around the time of childbirth. I use my considerable knowledge of birth, hypnotism, guided meditation, sound therapy, tens unit therapy for labor, massage, and more to help your birth be as fulfilling and comfortable as possible.

Whatever your circumstances, know that you’ll be supported, loved and nurtured during our time together! I’ll fight to ensure that you are not only heard, but also validated and respected!
